GOMMATESHWARA OF KARNATAKA

The Gommateshwara statue is a Jain pilgrimage site and one of the world's tallest free-standing monolithic statue.The statue is dedicated to the Jain figure Bahubali, who is said to have taught people to live in harmony with nature and not to harm any living being.

The Gommateshwara statue is a 57-foot (17 m) high monolithic statue.

It Is situated on Vindhyagiri Hill in the town of Shravanbelagola in the Indian state of Karnataka.

History

The statue was built in 981 AD by Chamundaraya, a Ganga warrior and minister.
